CICL Research

The CICL team develops a set of models and energy management solutions for various types of microgrids not only for teaching, demonstration, and research purposes, but also for supporting optimal decisions in terms of microgrid planning, economics, and policies.

This lab supports various types of research studies related to critical infrastructure and Industrial Control System (ICS) cybersecurity. This includes but not limited to protocol-based attack, vulnerability based on architecture, risk analysis, cyberattack impact, AI-based detection, hybrid honeypot solutions and optimal restoration studies. To support Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity studies, the CICL lab is equipped with cyberattacks emulation, detection and prevention tools such as IEC 61850 Avenue, IEC 61850 Toolset, Goose Injector, SMV Injector, RTDS, an AI-based Early Warning System, Claroty’s Continous Threat Detection and Enterprise Management Console.

The CICL lab support research studies on virtualization of crtitical energy infrastructures. This includes digital twinning of assets and systems, visualization, data acquisition and analysis, data synchronization, monitoring, reality data API, and reality analysis API.

Our team at CICL studies renewable generation and customer patterns of critical energy integration technologies, and investigate optimal approaches for the integration of energy infrastructural systems such as substation and microgrids through IEC 61850 standard, energy hub design and development, and vehicle-grid integration in smart cities.

Through its comprehensive real-time co-simulation platform, CICL supports substation automation protocol studies such as IEC 61850 Goose, Sampled Values and Manufacturing Messaging Specification, DNP.3, and Modbus analysis. Moreover, the lab investigates optimal automation, smart operation, and maintenance solutions for medium voltage substations.

The CICL studies advanced protection, monitoring and control solutions for power system substations and other critical energy infrastructures through virtualization technologies, machine learning, and other innovative tools and technologies.
