BCIT’s Centre for Applied Research and Innovation (CARI) is establishing an Advanced Additive Manufacturing Technology Hub to provide R&D services in 3D printing of advanced composites and metals.

For a limited time, we are offering free 3D prints to companies interested in prototyping and testing 3D printed parts/components in a wide variety of materials including but not limited to: copper, tool steel, stainless steel, Inconel, antimicrobial TPU/PLA, Onyx, and TPU.

This service is offered at no charge to Canadian companies, selected non-profits, other post-secondary organizations, and government research facilities during the commissioning period starting March 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions

BCIT will print one (1) part per request (no production runs) for the purposes of prototyping for new designs.

BCIT will provide 2 hours or less of technical assistance to ensure that the part you provide is printable.

There are no guarantees that any part submitted will be successfully printed (While 3D printing can be incredibly useful, there are limits to the size, configuration and materials that can be successfully printed. Many designs are not realizable due to material properties, size and/or complexity even if they can be successfully rendered on design software).

Once you submit your print file, you will be contacted by a BCIT Research Analyst within 10 business days and they will advise regarding the print timeline.

We will do our best to deliver your prototype as soon as possible but due to the commissioning process, the requirement to multistage or batch process some materials and other considerations, BCIT makes no promise regarding delivery or delivery date for prototypes. BCIT will do its best to provide timely delivery of prototypes but do not rely on this service for mission/project/sales critical timelines.

BCIT will print one (1) part per request (no production runs) for the purposes of prototyping for new designs.
BCIT will retain no intellectual property in regards the prototype delivered.
BCIT will do no post processing or testing to verify prototype strength, performance, finish and/or durability of the printed part (unless the client wishes to engage in a contract for services to do additional work). The parts are provided on an “as is” basis with no guarantee that the part will be fit for its intended purpose. BCIT assumes no responsibility for any costs incurred by the client, nor for any damages that may arise from the testing, use, sale or distribution of the delivered part.
BCIT reserves the right to reject any project for any reason including, but not limited to, size, requested material, unsuitability of object to be printed, copyright, patent or trademark violations, legal and/or ethical considerations.

Design for the part must be submitted electronically in the “.STL” file format as part of this form.
BCIT will provide a limited amount assistance (2 hours or less) of technical assistance to ensure that the proposed part is printable (not to actually create the design). There are no guarantees that any part submitted will be successfully printed (While 3D printing can be incredibly useful, there are limits to the size, configuration and materials that can be successfully printed. Many designs are not realizable due to material properties, size and/or complexity even if they can be successfully rendered on design software).
Due to the commissioning process, the requirement to multistage or batch process some materials (metals require chemical washing and sintering) and other considerations such as certain materials may have longer lead times due to current supply chain issues, BCIT makes no promise regarding delivery or delivery date for prototypes. BCIT will do its best to provide timely delivery of prototypes but do not rely on this service for mission/project/sales critical timelines.
BCIT reserves the right to rescind this offer at anytime without notice.
The Client acknowledges and agrees that, notwithstanding any wording in this agreement or any Confidentiality Agreement, BCIT is a public body subject to the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and that all information or materials supplied to BCIT by, or obtained or created by BCIT for, the Contractor under this agreement is subject to that legislation.
The Client acknowledges the proprietary interest of the Institute in all names, trademarks, crests, or logos owned by the Institute and shall not use any Institute name, trademark, crest or logo without the written consent of the Institute.
The Client shall not in any way or in any form publicize or advertise services provided by BCIT without the express written approval of the Institute which must be obtained in advance for each item of advertising or publicity.
