Sinkhole to Fishway: Solutions to daylight Guichon Creek.

September 18 from 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm PDT

Daylighted section of Guichon Creek

Guichon Creek is a major feature of BCIT’s Burnaby Campus.

While the south section is a vibrant riparian habitat, on the north of the campus the creek runs underground in a culvert, which was installed in the 1960’s. BCIT eventually plans to daylight as much of the creek as possible on campus.  This is on a voluntary basis and not government mandated.

In 2023 a sinkhole emerged close to the BCIT Recreation Services Centre caused by damage to this old underground culvert.

This provided an opportunity for an unique project to repair the damage by removing the damaged culvert and daylighting the section of creek, restoring it to a more natural state.

Join us for a special lecture, part of BCIT’s Guichon Creek Day, to find out more about how this fascinating project was achieved and the lessons learned that could be applied to daylighting other waterways.

We’re joined by the teams of experts from KWL and McElhanney who worked to develop engineering and environmental solutions for this project.

Discussion topics include:

  • Guichon Creek Watershed, Drainage Studies, and Campus Master Plan
  • History of Guichon Creek at the Weir
  • The Sinkhole Project Opportunity Identified
  • Design Challenges & Constraints
  • Construction Challenges
  • Construction and Final Product – The Sinkhole Today
  • Upcoming Projects & Next Steps for the BCIT Campus Vision
