Course Overview
This integrated skills course (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing) is designed for international students who wish to begin the ISEP but whose placement test scores indicate an Absolute or False Beginner level of English competence. The course, consisting of 25 hours of instruction per week, will prepare Absolute (Zero English) or False Beginner (Minimal English proficiency) level students with fundamental vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar, but will focus primarily on building basic oral/aural fluency, as well as basic reading and writing skills. Students will receive instruction and practice in interpersonal competencies. They will also receive instruction and practice in responding to questions in complete and short sentences, requesting information and responding with personal information.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use and respond to basic spoken courtesy formulas.
- Indicate problems in oral communication.
- Identify greetings or other goodwill expressions in speech.
- Follow simple instructions, positive and negative commands and requests.
- Follow short one-sentence written instruction.
- Get information from basic short texts; identify specific details.
- Copy numbers, letters, words, short phrases and sentences for personal use or to complete short writing tasks.
