Course Overview
This course introduces the fundamentals of Deep Energy/Emissions Deep Retrofits, with a focus on single-family and small multi-family buildings. The course will clarify the context for, and help learners develop their knowledge of various types of Deep Retrofits. International retrofit standards such as the Passive House EnerPHit and Living Future Institute Zero Carbon will also be introduced. Students will develop an understanding of various options available to assess an existing building for its Deep Retrofit potential. Students will also be introduced to elements of behavioural economics that may influence homeowners’ decisions during a Deep Retrofit journey. The course provides a strong foundation for other Deep Retrofit courses, including a future course on planning and executing Deep Retrofit plans. Key topics include Climate Change, Net Zero, Zero Carbon and Passive House EnerPHit standards, building science and House-As-A-System concept, Energuide assessment, depreciation reports, energy audits, and behavioural economics. This course is offered online with live virtual lectures and self-paced learning in the BCIT Learning Hub.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the context for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector .
- Explain the end-use breakdown and costs of energy and emissions in homes.
- Explain the differences between deep energy and deep emission retrofits for Part 9 buildings.
- Compare the various types of retrofits to lower emissions and energy intensity of single-family homes and small multi-family buildings.
- Explain the fundamentals of building science as it relates to building retrofits, and how the ‘House-As-A-System’ approach can be applied to retrofit decisions.
- Identify elements of behavioural economics theory that may influence a deep retrofit journey.
- List the high-level steps for creating a Deep Retrofit plan, including options for assessing an existing building.
