Course Overview
This 2-day workshop introduces networking concepts such as communications hardware, communications software, OSI and network protocols. This course will update the network administration knowledge with a particular emphasis on the fundamental skills needed to design and maintain secure network environments. The attendee will review network traffic analysis, concepts around the network security, intrusion detection, and improve defenses against malicious attacks. The attendee should have some knowledge of an operating system (e.g., Windows 10 or Linux). This workshop is suitable for those Help Desk Support technicians who plan to move into the networking area at work. This workshop is especially useful to those people who are handling network administration tasks.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Compare a variety of network protocols such as UDP/TCP, ICMP, HTTP, SMTP;
- Analyze network traffic and detect intrusion through the use of networking commands;
- Differentiate the traffic that monitors network topology from the normal communication;
- Assess the type of protocols used in data communication;
- Monitor in real time the network activities on a computer.

Check your myBCIT email account to access this information. The attendee should have some knowledge of an operating system (e.g., Windows 10 or Linux). This workshop is suitable for those Help Desk Support technicians who plan to move into the networking area at work. It is especially useful to those people who are handling network administration tasks. This course is eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC future skills grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant/. Students will register for the course themselves, and then apply for the StrongerBC future skills grant to cover payment (if eligible). The Winter 2025 StrongerBC future skills grant (FSG) will only be eligible for students continuing their FSG-eligible program that they started in Fall 2024.
