This course provides students with the basic knowledge of the principles, application, and limitations of modern electronic navigational aids.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student is expected to be able to perform the tasks as listed in the following topics.
Radar
- Explain the fundamental principles of safe operation and limitation of radar.
- Set up and operate radar in head-up, north-up, and true motion modes.
ARPA
- Explain the principles, safe operation, and limitation of ARPA.
- Set up and use ARPA for collision avoidance.
Radar Plotting
- Construct the motion triangle in head-up and relative motion modes.
- Interpret the motion triangle to determine target course, speed, closest point of approach, time of closest point of approach, and aspect of target.
- Plan and execute collision avoidance action using motion triangle plotting.
Loran-C
- Explain the principles, safe operation, and limitation of the Loran-C system.
- Demonstrate the setting up procedure of a Loran-C receiver.
Satellite Navigation
- Explain the principles, safe operation, and limitation of the Global Positioning System.
- Demonstrate the operation of a GPS/DGPS receiver.
- Knowledge of other satellite systems.
Echo Sounder
- Explain the principles, safe operation, and limitation of the echo sounder.
- Demonstrate the setting up procedure for an echo sounder.
- Explain the use of the echo sounder recorder.
Gyrocompass
- Explain the principles, safe operation, and limitation of the gyrocompass.
- Describe the starting and stopping procedure for a gyrocompass.
- Describe the setting up procedure for a gyrocompass repeater system.
Autopilot
- Explain the basic operation of the auto pilot.
- Discuss the characteristics of autopilot.
- Explain the changeover procedure from manual to auto and vice versa.
Course Recorder
- Explain the operation of the course recorder.
Speed Logs
- Describe the types of speed logs and their operation.
Voyage Data Recorder
- Explain the use of the voyage data recorder.
Automatic Identification System (AIS)
- Explain the principles, safe operation, and limitation of the automatic identification system.
