Course Overview
This course will focus on detail options to mitigate thermal bridging and achieve an airtight envelope. It is meant to simulate the design and construction process of real-life projects where design teams must deal with the owner's requirements, building code requirements, budgets, supplier constraints, construction management, and commissioning activities. The course will explore the following topics: overview of the BC Energy Step Code for Part 3 buildings; thermal bridging review and examples; design strategies to achieve zero energy ready buildings; and related considerations, including costing, constructability, and site quality control.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain what is the BC Energy Step Code and performance metrics for Part 3 Buildings
- Explain how thermal bridging through the building envelope and air-tightness affect energy use.
- Describe the process for reviewing detail design options at critical design stages and be aware of several available resources (e.g. BETB Guide, Low TEDI guide, Building Pathfinder, Thermal.ly)
- Compare solution details for specific construction considerations (e.g., mitigating thermal bridging, cost, constructability, etc.)
Effective as of Fall 2020
