Course Overview
This course provides the opportunity to individual students to pursue and extend their knowledge and expertise in a specific subject related to emerging technologies and their applications in smart grid. The nature and scope of each individual directed studies project and its expected deliverable is either suggested by a student, industry or faculty and should be approved by a prospective faculty supervisor in consultation with the program head before the start of the course. A student’s individual directed studies project is carried out under the supervision and guidance of a faculty member. The aim of this course is to strengthen the applied nature of the program by covering the most pertinent smart grid technologies which the industry is focusing on at a given point in time. The course topic can cover some of the diverse areas of smart grid such as Utility Regulation & Governance, Energy Trading & Transactional Markets, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Substation Automation and Cyber/Physical Security, Energy Management Systems, Protection and Control and Distribution Management Systems.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the motivation, expected benefits, assumption, and projected outcomes envisioned at the start of the directed studies proposal
- Explain the main challenges and problems that the directed study proposed to address
- Discuss how well the study addressed the challenges and problems stated in the proposal
- Provide a cost benefit analysis of applying the results of the directed study in a real environment
- Discuss the social and environmental impact of the directed study
- Explain the technical benefits of applying the results of this study in an actual setting
- Discuss the challenges and obstacles in applying the result of this study and suggest possible feasible solutions
- Provide analysis of the result and show how much the expected outcomes defined in the initial directed study proposal have been achieved
- Discuss future work to obtain better results and ways to resolve the issues that encountered during this study
