Course details

​This course is the final project course for the Controls and Energy Management Program. Students will apply the knowledge they have learned of building energy efficiency, automation systems, commissioning, and data analytics to propose solutions to optimize the system operation of a real building. Students will work in groups for this project to assess a building and determine controls related performance improvement measures. The deliverable for this course is a report that presents the findings of the assessment, budget, and recommendations of improvement strategies, including anticipated cost savings. A short final presentation will be delivered to the class to outline the project and recommendations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of building automation systems and energy efficiency to solve a real-world problem and improve building energy performance.
  • Document the relevant technical information required to make educated decisions about automation systems optimization or upgrades.
  • Apply best practices and audit techniques to uncover deficiencies or opportunities for improvement to building control systems.
  • Document findings from an investigation of a building control systems and prepare recommendations to address deficiencies.
  • Conduct basic energy savings calculations to identify the impact of proposed recommendations.
  • Identify organizational roadblocks to implementing upgrade projects or sustaining energy savings, and provide practical recommendations.
  • Prepare a clear technical report outlining the project purpose and scope, summarizing findings and recommendations, and providing supporting technical information to demonstrate how recommendations were determined, and the steps for implementation.
