- International Fees
International fees are typically 3.12 times the domestic tuition. Exact cost will be calculated upon completion of registration.
Course Overview
This course provides an overview of different methods and technologies used to control the release of air pollutants from industrial sources. The different types of contaminants, including dangerous goods and hazardous wastes and the governing regulations are discussed. A particular emphasis will be given to combustion process and its material and energy balances in order to quantify emission rates. The basic design principles of the various technologies, their application and effectiveness in terms of energy consumption, multimedia impacts are discussed. Sustainable pollution prevention planning will be introduced. Cost analysis and economic considerations of the selected control techniques will be discussed through examples. The knowledge of fluid dynamics and gas laws are required for this course.
Domestic fees
$843.90
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss fundamental air pollution issues as they relate to industrial processes.
- Discuss the approaches for minimization of hazardous waste and the application of techniques to reduce hazardous waste generation.
- Carry out combustion material and energy balances.
- Propose the application of the various methods of air pollution control including: gravitational settling and cyclonic particulate removal, filtration, electrostatic precipitation, gaseous and particulate scrubbing.
- Discuss current and emergent air pollution control techniques for various pollutants.
- Evaluate industrial air pollution control options that are sustainable and effective in terms of energy consumption and multimedia impacts.
- Justify the most appropriate strategies to enable sustainable pollution prevention planning.
- Consider engineering cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in the selection of a control technique.
Effective as of Fall 2019
