Course details

This course presents an overview of the full scope of the development of an energy management project. The course provides a practical opportunity to bring together all the components of an energy management project learned in the Sustainable Energy Manager program by preparing an energy management project plan for a real business or building. Various project delivery methods, financing models and perspectives on gaining executive approval are explored.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Outline the components of project development.
  • Differentiate between levels of energy audit in the project development process.
  • Compare, evaluate, and select various project delivery methods including traditional methods and performance contracts.
  • Contrast the various financing alternatives for energy management projects.
  • Outline the tension between capital budgets and operating expenses with respect to energy management projects.
  • Differentiate between utility cost savings and avoided costs.
  • Outline timeline and process for business case development in project development process.
  • Differentiate between the role of project manager and construction manager.
  • Prepare a communications plan for an energy management project.
  • Create a measurement and verification plan for an energy management project.
  • Contrast the four main approaches to measurement and verification in the International Performance Measurement & Verification Protocol.
  • Assess baseline adjustments in evaluating project performance.
  • Deliver an executive summary presentation for an energy management project that can be used to help demonstrate your abilities when marketing yourself for your future career.
