Course Overview
This course is intended for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Police/Law Enforcement, Investigators, Victim Service Workers and Attorneys who work with victims of interpersonal violence or who have taken the Forensic Nurse Examiner training. Prerequisite baseline understanding of forensic sciences required. Students will learn about the seriousness of strangulation from a medical and legal perspective, how to identify acts of strangulation in cases of interpersonal violence, assess for strangulation injuries, general medical management, Canadian laws and forensic documentation specific to this unique type of violence. Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a digital badge titled “Forensic Examination of Non-Fatal Injuries".
Prerequisite(s)
- FSCT 7840 OR Currently working/returning to work in field of health care, law enforcement or investigation specific to victims of interpersonal violence OR by permission of the forensics department.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the seriousness and consequences of non-fatal strangulation as an aspect of interpersonal violence from both a medical and legal perspective.
- Conduct and document an accurate forensic/medical history of cases involving known or suspected non-fatal strangulation.
- Assess a victim/patient for strangulation injury from a forensic and medical perspective.

- This 0.5 credit course is ONLINE. There will be a 3 hour livestream session on Tues. Feb 11, 2025 - 1300-1600 (1:00pm - 4:00pm PST). Attendance for the live session is mandatory. Students must complete the asynchronous module before attendance at the live session. There is no required textbook. Please contact the Program Assistants for departmental approval to register (including your BCIT student A0#) at BCIT_Forensics@bcit.ca.
