Course Overview
This course builds upon the concepts presented in NSNE 7100, NSNE 7200, NSNE 7300, and NSNE 7900. This combination theory and clinical course delivers twelve weeks of guided independent study, a one-day workshop, and 40 hours of clinical practice. A case-study format is used to address high-risk respiratory health challenges of infants. Concepts of respiratory distress syndrome and bronchopulmonary dysplasia will be examined throughout the course. Non-invasive and invasive ventilation modalities will be explored using a developmentally supportive and family-centered care approach.

Learning Outcomes
As a health care practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Describe the high-risk respiratory health challenges that increase infant vulnerability.
- Identify non-invasive and invasive modes of respiratory support.
- Identify and examine pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents used to treat high-risk respiratory health challenges.
- Interpret and analyze infant blood gas results in relation to case studies and modalities of respiratory support.
- Apply developmentally supportive and family-centered care within the context of caring for infants with high-risk respiratory health challenges.
- Demonstrate safe and competent nursing care of infants receiving non-invasive and invasive modes of respiratory support.
- Demonstrate accurate and timely documentation of nursing care.
- Practice in accordance with Professional Standards for Registered Nurses
