Course Overview
This instructor lead, hands-on course is aimed at those with no prior database experience and covers the use of the latest Microsoft Access database program. Students acquire the skills needed to create and manage functional Access databases. They will learn how to design database systems, generate basic forms and reports, and manipulate and query data through a combination of lectures and assignments. By the end of this course, successful participants will understand the Access approach to relational database management, and will be able to apply their skills to create, manage and maintain a database management system. COMP 1370 will be offered in the Spring (April) term or Fall (September) term.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of MS Access.
- Understand the principals of normalization to create a functional database.
- Create multiple tables and establish relationships between tables.
- Add, modify and edit records in tables.
- Create data entry forms using wizards and customize forms.
- Create queries using the Query by Example (QBE) window.
- Effectively use the report generator.

- Course is 18 hours synchronous online classes. BCIT Computing is primarily a Microsoft Windows environment. Students must provide their own current model Windows-compatible PC. i5 or higher equivalent processor, with 8 GB of RAM minimum, and 256 GB minimum storage. Highspeed internet access is needed for online sections and for homework. Mac users must have the ability to manage and support their iOS computer. They may need to create a virtual Windows environment using Parallels or VMWare Fusion. COMP instructors may not be able to assist Mac users with software compatibility issues. BCIT does not provide access to Parallels or support for students to use a Mac to run Windows. Late registration is not permitted.
