Course Overview
The Skills assessment exam is designed for students applying for re-admission to the Medical Radiography Level 2 or Level 3. Re-admission is not guaranteed. Students are required to demonstrate their competency in clinical skills learned in MRAD 1216. The focus is on patient care, documentation, image production and quality. Students perform basic imaging procedures of the axal (vertebrae and thoracic cage) and appendicular skeletons (excluding skull), chest and abdomen. Students must demonstrate the positioning requirements and patient care associated with gastrointestinal system examinations. Emphasis is placed on routine positioning as well as problem solving for atypical patients and equipment challenges

- Term Two: Prerequisite is successful completion of medical radiography term one. Term Four: Prerequisite is successful completion of medical radiography term three.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- interpret physician requests for patient examinations.
- effectively communicate with the patient and healthcare / instructional team.
- plan the examination based on patient needs and equipment limitations.
- apply appropriate interview questions to ascertain patient's history and identity.
- provide patient pre and post procedural care instructions.
- assess the patient's physical, mental, or psychological limitations and provide for alternate methods of achieving required images.
- describe course of action for confirmed pregnant patients.
- provide patient care prior, during, and post examination.
- apply immobilization techniques for pediatric imaging.
- practice principles of beam geometry on body anatomy.
- in an organized manner, accurately position the patient to demonstrate the required body anatomy of the: a)axial and appendicular skeletons; b)vertebrae; c)thoracic cage and shoulder girdle; d)chest; e)abdomen; f)gastrointestinal system.
- relate relational anatomy to external surface landmarks and bodily habitus in order to position the patient to demonstrate required structures.
- demonstrate effective and efficient use of radiographic, accessory equipment and PACS.
- accurately select, activate and monitor radiographic exposures on various equipment to account for patient variations such as habitus and pathologies.
- provide a radiation safe environment for all members of the department and patients.
- evaluate radiographic images for image quality and diagnostic acceptability.
- apply corrective measures as required to resultant image.
- use applied scenarios to demonstrate required anatomy and or theory.

- The MRAD Skills Exam is designed for students applying for re-admission to Level Two (2) or to Level Three (3) of the Medical Radiography program. Re-admission is not guaranteed. To be granted re-admission to Level Two (2) or to Level Three (3), the student must successfully demonstrate competency in clinical skills, there must be a clinical seat available for the student, and the student must review a success plan with the program head.
