Course Overview
This online course defines sustainability and explores several dimensions of sustainability in the Western Canadian health care context. The need for sustainability in financial and human capital will be emphasized and current practices and imperatives will be reviewed. Sustainability is a significant leadership issues for health leaders. Leadership theories and practices will be applied throughout the course in different scenarios and contexts. The course fosters critical analysis of what leaders need to do to ensure a sustainable future for themselves and their organizations. *This course will be offered once each year in the fall term as per the annual course schedule.*

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the challenge of health care sustainability from national, provincial, organizational, and personal perspective.
- Discuss dimensions of health care system sustainability with respect to financial resources, human capital, and other dimensions of sustainability.
- Develop financial literacy in finance, accounting, and sustainability concepts used in the BC health care environment.
- Develop skills in preparing, interpreting, and explaining workload, operating and capital budgets at a program and departmental level.
- Relate health leadership and management issues to accounting and financial concepts.
- Develop professional written communication skills.
- Communicate with stakeholders to support effective budgeting, financial management, and pursuit of cost-savings
- Foster leadership skills and professional judgement through dialogue with peers and reflection on the LEADS in a Caring Environment framework.
- Critically review common analytical tools and managerial techniques and their potential impact on sustainability in the health care system.
