Course Overview
The purpose of this course is to introduce participants to the high acuity nursing specialty and the role of the high acuity nurse. The participants will focus on expanding their ability to think critically and engage in participatory relationships; examine the concept of health and explore their understanding of health in order to promote health for high acuity patients and families. The participants will explore the lived experience of an acute illness (e.g. COPD and respiratory insufficiency) while applying the theory of oxygen supply and demand, comprehensive assessments, and ethical clinical decision-making within the high acuity nursing practice environment.

Learning Outcomes
As a healthcare practitioner, you are expected to follow professional standards of practice throughout all SN programs and courses. In this course, you will have opportunities to use the processes of critical thinking, systematic inquiry, communication, collaboration, leadership, professionalism, and clinical decision-making. Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Differentiate high acuity nursing practice from current practice with respect to the role of the nurse, context of practice, nature of illness and experience of the patient.
- Formulate conclusions about cellular oxygenation and end-organ perfusion using the oxygen supply and demand framework.
- Complete a comprehensive assessment to determine appropriate care for a high acuity patient.
- Recognize cues to form judgments about potential and actual problems for high acuity patients.
- Prioritize interventions for complex high acuity patients informed by the situated clinical decision-making framework.
- Advocate for appropriate interventions by integrating multiple sources of nursing knowledge.
- Interpret arterial blood gases within the context of the high acuity patient.
- Form accurate conclusions about oxygen supply and demand in relation to respiratory insufficiency and disease.

- This is an internet-based NET course section except for two exams which will be held on campus and one optional workshop. Please contact the Program Assistant for approval and for further details. Nurses interested in the High Acuity program should have a minimum of six months (preferably one year) of recent experience on an acute care unit. For interested nurses from international practice, residential or other areas of care, a refresher course on in acute care may be required. This course is delivered in an asynchronous online format. On the first day of class, log in to www.bcit.ca/learn/ to access your course.
