Course Overview
This course is designed to convey the nature and function of capital markets, the important features of the securities which trade in these markets and the factors which contribute to the value of securities. A discussion of derivative instruments and mutual funds will be included.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Evaluate the structure of capital markets and their function within the Canadian economy.
- Analyze the purpose of investments and appreciate their risks and rewards.
- Interpret the workings and mechanics of a stock exchange.
- Identify sources of information on the performance of publicly traded companies.
- Interpret the nature of marketable securities and the factors which influence their price.
- Categorize the various methods employed to evaluate the worth of a marketable security.
- Outline the nature of derivatives markets and compare and contrast the principal options.
- Assess the nature of mutual funds in terms of their advantages, disadvantages and performance.

- Class WILL NOT be held on Monday, September 30th (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation), Monday, October 14th (Thanksgiving) & Monday, November 11th (Remembrance Day). Students pursuing the Core Curriculum courses to qualify for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation are now required to study FMGT 3600 (Security Analysis) instead of FMGT 4620.

- The following dates will be HELD IN-CLASS at the Downtown Campus and are MANDATORY. Mid-Term: Monday, February 10th (17:30 - 21:30) Final: Monday, March 17th (17:30 - 21:30). Class WILL NOT be held Monday, February 17th (Family Day). This is not a self-paced course. You will be expected to be available and online on the posted days and times shown on your registration schedule. It is important you have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. Attendance for the in-person exams/classes is MANDATORY. Course content, type and quality of assignments, and general standards for this online course are the same as classroom courses. To be successful in this online course, plan to spend 7-10 hours per week on your studies, or more of it’s a condensed course, starting Week 1.
