Course details

The course covers an introduction to the analysis of signals, amplitude (SSB, DSB, QAM) and angle (FM, PM) modulations as well as sampling and pulse code modulation (PCM) techniques. Also covered are the principles of digital data communications, probability theory, random processes, and performance of analog and digital systems in the presence of noise. The course includes an introduction to information theory and error correction techniques.

  2. This course will be delivered 100% in-person at the BCIT Burnaby campus. Labs and tutorials to be scheduled outside of class hours, on or before the first class. Registrants who are not BTech Electronics students must have program head approval. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Calculate the SNR, channel bandwidth and the rate of communication modulation.
  • Classify signals, describe the unit impulse function and represent signals by an orthogonal set.
  • Solve problems on amplitude modulation (AM, DSB, QAM, SSB and VSB), angle modulation, QAM and PCM.
  • Provide details of digital data transmission including line coding, pulse shaping, and digital multiplexing.
  • Delineate the NA digital hierarchy including framing, signaling and capacity management schemes.
  • Solve problems of probability and random processes related to communications.
  • Describe the behavior of analog and digital communication systems in the presence of noise and calculate performance.
  • Calculate channel capacity, BER, and use error detection and correction codes.
  • Perform five lab experiments involving analog and digital signals, AM, FM, QAM modulation, and AWGN – BER relationships.
