Course Overview
The objectives of this course are to give students the opportunity to explore in-depth a selected area of computer technology and identify complex real-world problems. Students will select a problem to solve in their Major Project. They will critically analyze the problem, existing challenges and issues, and related literature. Students will prepare a project proposal that includes the project’s objectives, specifications, review of similar systems and related literature, feasibility analysis, and a design of a solution that should be innovative, experimental or exploratory in nature. Students will implement a proof-of-concept prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of their project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and evaluate opportunities, needs for real world problems, and/or empirical research in an applied computing environment.
- Identify a real world complex problem that needs to be solved with a computing solution.
- Propose solutions to pitfalls inherent in research methodologies, and specifically address issues related to reliability and validity.
- Identify the project objectives, their importance, and how they relate to current practice and advances in technology and research in the computing environment.
- Access and interpret current primary source research material using the Internet, professional journals, and other sources of research.
- Critically analyze and evaluate published literature with respect to the project’s objectives.
- Identify the project requirements.
- Present possible solutions of the problem with a unique view via synthesis and further exploration.
- Analyse the project’s feasibility and create a proposal (including a draft design, relevant diagrams, a review of existing literature, and test plan) using principles of software engineering.
- Implement a proof-of-concept prototype that demonstrates the feasibility of the project.

- This course will run with 12 hours in class and 33 online. In-class sessions at the Burnaby campus: 14 September, 12 October, 2 November, 30 November. 1. Please email cstbtech@bcit.ca for departmental approval. Include your student number (A0#), course number (COMP__) and preferred CRN. 2. This is a CST BTech course. CST BTech courses are also open to non-bachelor program students. 3. CST Bachelor program students have up to seven (7) years to complete the Bachelor program starting from the date of their first Technical degree-level course or the date of acceptance to the Bachelor program, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.
