Course details
Presents a practical study of Canadian business law, including the legal and administrative systems, torts, contracts, sale of goods and consumer protection, employment, business organizations, and intellectual property. Participation in this course, taught by lawyers, prepares you to recognize and feel comfortable with the legal aspects of doing business. This course may be eligible for students to receive funding through the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant at www.bcit.ca/financial-aid/strongerbc-future-skills-grant. Students register themselves into the course, then apply for the StrongerBC Future Skills Grant to cover payment, if eligible.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the historical and constitutional foundations of Canada’s legal system.
- Describe the structure of the court system and alternate dispute resolution methods.
- Describe the basic principles of tort law, with a focus on torts that arise in the business context, including product and professional liability, and the available defences.
- Demonstrate an understanding of contract law, including enforcement and discharging, with special focus on marketing communications, implied consent, contests, SPAM and social media advertising.
- Compare different types of business organizations and the resulting rights and obligations arising from each.
- Explain the legal obligations of employees, employers, agents, fiduciaries and independent contractors.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of intellectual property, infringement and remedies, especially on copyright, trademarks and industrial design.
- Explain the legal obligations in sales transactions, consumer rights, and the prohibitions against deceptive marketing and trade practices.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the requirements of privacy and data protection for marketing.
- Think critically and recognize the potential for, and ways to avoid legal issues as they arise in business transactions.
- Demonstrate use of accurate legal language for effective communication with legal advisors.
