Course Overview
This course provides an in-depth exploration of sound design principles and techniques for various media applications, including film, television, radio, and social media. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and projects, students will learn the fundamentals of sound design, including microphones, recording, and editing techniques, mixing, and mastering. Emphasis will be placed on applying creative concepts to enhance storytelling through sound.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:
- Describe how the environment affects sound waves and analyze the effects.
- Explain how a microphone and mixer functions and demonstrate techniques.
- Compare various sound processing equipment and evaluate functionality.
- Discuss theoretical examples of simple post production and define techniques.
- Explain how digital sound is recorded and use of digital editing software.
- Determine television and location sound show requirements.
- Analyze effective storytelling skills through technical competence.
- Write and produce a Podcast production for the web.

- You will require access to the Adobe Creative Cloud to complete this course - registered BCIT students will receive further information closer to the course start date with subscription details. Students must bring wired headphones with a ¼ inch plug and 3.5mm adapter to every class. This course will be delivered synchronously in person, requiring your attendance and participation in scheduled classes held at Burnaby Campus SE10 building on the days and times noted on the course web page. Basic computer operation knowledge is highly recommended, and students should have access to a home computer or laptop for completing assignments outside of class. Additionally, students have the option to book workstations at the school to complete assignments. If seats remain, registration is permitted without approval up to September 18, 2024, by calling 604-434-1610.
