Program overview
The BCIT BSN program is a 3-year degree program, comprised of nine terms. The program curriculum enables learners to systematically acquire the competencies that characterize the attributes of a BCIT BSN graduate. These attributes are advocate, collaborator, communicator, decision maker, global citizen, leader, life-long learner, and professional. Through a spiralled and integrated approach, utilizing active teaching and learning strategies, concepts provide the framework for developing nursing knowledge and practice capacity. The courses are clustered around the following themes: Communication in Nursing Practice, Context of Nursing, Nursing Knowledge, Practice of Nursing and Nursing as a Profession.
In Terms 1 through 8 learners complete practice placements in medical, surgical, pediatric, obstetrical, mental health, public health and community settings. In Term 7 and 8, learners have the opportunity to take specialty nursing theory courses. In Term 9, Preceptorship, learners complete 12 weeks in an entry-level practice setting with the option of the focus of practice setting if eligible.
A BCIT instructor is assigned to monitor the learner’s progress and is available to provide consultation and assistance on an individual basis. The instructor visits the learner and preceptor in the agency and is responsible for the final evaluation of the learner.
