What’s this area about?
Process Operators work shifts on process and production lines—sometimes in groups limited to a specific work cell contained in the main plant, and at other times alone, independently monitoring a unit of electro-mechanical equipment in a far-flung part of the world. Often the entry level position, Process Operators for industries like mining or oil & gas are recruited from local indigenous populations, and sometimes with minimal education requirements. Turnover is often high.
As many processes have more and more high-tech elements embedded, the technical competence needs of Process Operators are increasing. Basic education and learning abilities are required in order to quickly embrace and adopt the technical functional needs of the job. As process breakdowns are so costly, some employers want Process Operators to have some basic maintenance awareness in order to recognize problems before they occur.
