To make substantial progress in your studies as an adult learner and a health care professional it is important to develop clear expectations and a clear plan of study. Once admitted to our program, consider yourself in partnership with our faculty and staff to enable the attainment of your individual learning objectives and the achievement of overall program objectives.
The following set of milestones have been developed by our department in order to support all our students in their academic progress through the program. Students are asked to do their best to adhere to these guidelines, but if there are personal/work circumstances that make these guidelines infeasible, to discuss the situation with the Program Head.
Plan your studies and learn about the program
On the Health Care Management department web site, read about the courses, programs, certificates offered, and FAQs. The quickest way to obtain specific information about a course, such as textbooks, tuition fees, and start dates is by clicking on the course in the annual course schedule.
If you are unsure that you meet the entrance requirements, complete our online form. This helps us to verify your educational background and work experience and respond to you within a week. During the week prior to the course start date, BCIT will process this information as they are received.
Please subscribe to the Health Leadership newsletter to receive updates on new courses and initiatives of our department.
Attend a Roundtable Information Session
As a potential candidate for our programs or a current BCIT student or alumni, you are cordially invited to attend a Roundtable Information Session hosted by the Health Care Management Department. The objective of the session is for you to learn about our programs and participate in informal Q&A with the faculty, admissions officer, and staff. Refreshments are provided. These sessions last 1.5 hours and are held on the BCIT Burnaby campus. Although you are not required to attend an information session prior to enrolling in a course or being accepted to the program, the sessions are highly recommended.
Roundtable Information Sessions are scheduled:
- Last week of January
- First week of May
- Last week of July
- Third week of November

Web Registration opens:
- Third week in January for Spring term courses

Order your course materials
- Order your course materials through the BCIT Bookstore
Tips
- Web registration is open up until the weekend before classes start, however registering this close to the course start date is not recommended. You should leave enough time to receive your textbooks, organize your work/personal schedules, and get into a focused state of mind for a period of demanding coursework.

- If you are accepted to the program, you should begin your first course in the immediate next term, and if for some reason, you will not be starting your first course, please indicate so in writing (email the Department). Students who do not begin studies within 6 months of being admitted the program are at risk of not meeting academic progress performance expectations of the department.
- If you are applying to the program or have already been accepted, and you have completed an academic course that is similar to a course in your program, you can petition for transfer credit towards your program. To do so, submit an Part Time Program Transfer Credit Application and follow the instructions on the form.
On the Start Date of your course
- On the Start Date of your course, Log in to the Learning Hub
- Within the course, introduce yourself in the discussion area. It is critical for you to post your introduction on day 1 of the course. During the first week, course participants are assigned to work groups and teams and the information provided in your introduction is required for this process.
- For technical matters, contact technical support
- Repeat the registration and “course start” process for each subsequent course in your program
Request a Statement of Completion
Contact the Health Care Management Department via email and request a Statement of Completion after you complete the initial four courses within your program. You should reach this milestone within 12-months (three academic terms, or the first year) of study. The Statement of Completion is not an academic credential, however it represents your hard work and accomplishment in reaching the half-way point for the program. Some students will use this document to demonstrate their progress to others.
At this milestone, you should ensure that your academic record and transcript is in order, evaluate your progress as compared to program expectations, and schedule a telephone conversation with the Program Head.
Start planning your HLED 8280 Leadership Integrated Project
Also at this milestone, you should start planning your HLED 8280 Leadership Integrated Project. Contact the Program Assistant and request a copy of the Project Proposal/Approval form. After you have identified a suitable project topic, an organizational sponsor, and you have your project approved, you will be ready to register for HLED 8280. We expect that most students will conduct their Integrated Project during the Fall term, however some projects can be done other terms, by special arrangement with the department. Project topics must be approved by the Program Head before you formally register for HLED 8280.
Continue through the second year of studies
Repeat the registration and “course start” process for each subsequent course in your program
