Notice: temporary changes to our private medical insurance for international students starting full-time programs

Until further notice, private medical insurance coverage dates for newly admitted international students will be determined by the arrival date indicated in your mandatory BCIT Travel & Self-Isolation Plan. Once you submit your plan, an International Student Centre staff member will email you with more information about medical insurance.

If you have any questions about this, please contact

Medical Insurance Assessment Forms & Opting Out

International students starting regular full-time programs should submit a Medical Insurance Assessment Form [PDF] by the deadline stated on their conditional letter of acceptance. This form will help to determine if a student already has adequate medical insurance or not.

If an international student does not already have adequate medical insurance, then they will be charged a non-refundable $180 fee and enrolled in three months of private basic medical insurance through International Insurance.

See Opt Out for more information.

Please note that the information on this page does not apply to students starting the ISEP program, part-time programs and exchange and study abroad students staying at BCIT for a single term.

Regular months of enrolment for temporary private medical insurance coverage is generally for three entire calendar months, which should align with your waiting period for MSP coverage. When your coverage will start depends on your program start date.

If your program start date falls within the 11th to 31st day of a month, then you will be automatically enrolled in coverage starting from the beginning of that month. For example, if your program starts on March 29, then you would be automatically enrolled in coverage from March 1 – May 31.

If your program start date falls within the 1st to 10th day of a month, then you will be automatically enrolled in coverage starting at the beginning of the previous month. For example, if you your program starts on September 7, then you would be automatically enrolled in coverage from August 1 – October 31.

Please see the table below for the “default” formula that we use to determine which three months you would be automatically enrolled in.

Option to change your months of coverage

If you will arrive in the month that your program starts AND your program start date falls within the 1st to 10th of a month, then you should notify us so that we can change your coverage months to align with the months of your actual MSP waiting period.

For example, if you will arrive in BC on January 5 and you will begin your program on January 7 then you must notify us so that we can arrange coverage for the months of January through March. If you do not notify us then you would be charged and enrolled automatically for the months of December through February, and then you would still have to pay extra for coverage during the month of March since you wouldn’t be eligible for MSP benefits until April 1.

You can notify us to change your months of coverage by sending an email to with all of the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Your BCIT student number
  • Your program and starting date at BCIT
  • Your planned date of arrival in BC

The deadline for changing you coverage months is 45 days before your program start date. After that, changes may not be permitted.
