MS Teams Virtual Phones

As previously communicated, BCIT is replacing Jabber and desk phones across the Institute with MS Teams Virtual Phone this fall.

This exciting upgrade is part of our ongoing efforts to streamline communication tools within Microsoft 365, enhancing connectivity and simplifying our technology landscape. With MS Teams Virtual Phone, staff and faculty will be able to conveniently receive and place inbound and outbound calls using the MS Teams app.

What to expect

  • Roll-out of MS Teams Virtual Phone timeline: IT Services will start collecting desk phones and disconnecting Jabber incrementally from October 28-December 31. IT Services will notify you via email before your phone is removed, with details on how to get started with MS Teams Virtual Phone.
  • Phone numbers: Your current phone number will be retained. However, if you have a shared phone number, you will be assigned a new one.
  • Jabber: Jabber will be phased out by the end of the year. You will receive instructions via email in the coming weeks on how to archive your data in Jabber. After transitioning to MS Teams Virtual Phone, Jabber will no longer be available for calls.

There is no immediate action needed from you at this time. For more information on MS Teams Virtual Phone, read the Knowledge Base article.
