Course Overview
This course introduces learners to regulations, laws, organizations, and best practice related to portability, data access and sharing agreements, data use, and the application of the fundamental concepts of data and data management used in health informatics. Learners examine policies and procedures for data sharing across systems (e.g., health information exchanges, public health reporting). The course discusses strategies for ensuring provenance and integrity of individual and population health information sourced across multiple integrated systems, and the role and importance of data stewardship. The course emphasizes the importance of data integrity and data quality associated with all aspects of care delivery and services related to workflow design and best practice. Learners compare and contrast patient-generated health and clinical-setting data and discuss the various types of specialized and emerging data sources. The course discusses precision medicine (i.e., customized treatment plans based on patient-specific data) and genomic and proteomic data use in clinical care (bioinformatics). Learners examine the differences between structured and unstructured data and explore the use of natural language processing in analyzing clinical narratives in the electronic health record. Case studies provide opportunities to learn about, compare, and apply descriptive and inferential statistics, common descriptive measures, and frequently employed inferential statistical tests.
